Microsoft, Haier Join Hands to Develop "E-family"

Within the next three years, Microsoft will work with China Haier Group Co. to work out a common strategy for developing China's "E-family," Hou Kaiwen, deputy general manager of Microsoft China Co., Ltd., announced recently in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong Province.

The "E-family" means that all electric household appliances, such as TV sets, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines, could be linked to a computerized system, which can automatically operate and control these appliances according to the programs set.

If they succeed, this system could automatically send E-mail, open air conditioner, and even change TV channel for the owner.

Jinan, with a population of 6 million, will be the first city to effect the "E-family" and about 10 to 20 percent of the city's households are expected to become "E-families" in three years.

Haier, based in Shandong, is a major electrical household appliance manufacturer in China, and its outstanding performance has been well known both at home and abroad.
