Clinton Has Yet to Decide on Possible Trip to Pyongyang

US President Bill Clinton is still evaluating whether to carry out a last-minute visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and an announcement on the issue is not expected before early next week, the White House said Friday, December 22.

"We're obviously continuing to work on the range of issues that are associated with DPRK. But I actually would not expect an announcement any time before early next week," White House spokesman Jake Siewert said.

U.S. officials had previously expressed hope that Clinton would make a final decision before December 25 on whether he would visit Pyongyang before leaving office on January 20.

"We'll proceed based on his (Clinton's) assessment of what makes sense for our national interests. And we've consulted heavily with the president-elect's teams and let them know what we 're thinking and what we're doing," Siewert said.
