Siemens Industry Park Established in Shanghai

Jiang Yiren, deputy mayor of Shanghai, and Dr. Heinrich v. Pierer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens AG, unveiled for the Siemens Industry Park in Shanghai on January 8,2001.

Dr. Heinrich v. Pierer said at the inauguration ceremony that China has become Siemens' third largest market in the world. The Siemens industrial park is a good example of the German company's great success in China. And Siemens will join efforts with Chinese partners to provide consumers with the most advanced technology and best services.

According to Jiang Yiren, the Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. (SSMC) is one of the most successful joint ventures in Shanghai, also one of the earliest founded hi-tech enterprises in Pudong New Area. He is glad to see that the SSMC has become one of the most important telecommunication manufacturers in Shanghai.

Founded in 1993, SSMC is engaged mainly in GSM mobile telecommunication system and mobile phone development, manufacture, marketing, and engineering services, and its products are geared to China and the Asian-Pacific market. At present, the SSMC is Siemens' only mobile phone production base established outside Germany. The company has doubled its sales volume and enlarged its scale for years running, and now the Siemens Industrial Park has come into being.

According to statistics from Shanghai Statistical Bureau, the sales volume of SSMC in 1999 rose to the ninth among all enterprises in Shanghai. The SSMC has built altogether 34 GSM mobile networks for China Mobile and China Unicom in 26 provinces throughout China. Currently, the market share of SSMC ranks second and third in China's mobile communication network equipment market and China's mobile phone market respectively.
