6 Killed, 10 wounded in Yemeni Shooting Incident

Six people have been killed and 10 others wounded when two gunmen opened fire at a mosque north of Sanaa Wednesday night, Yemeni security sources said on Thursday.

The shooting incident took place at Dhibin village of Omran Province, 90 kilometers north of the capital, amid debate among rival tribesmen over nominees for the municipal elections scheduled on February 20, the sources added.

Five people died on the spot and one died from injuries in a hospital, said hospital sources in Sanaa, adding that seven of the injured were in a critical condition. The attackers fled the scene.

Yemen is largely a tribal society, where men can carry weapons around. The government launched a campaign in 1999 to disarm the public.
