Berger Urges Bush to Maintain US Engagement OverseasUS National Security Adviser Samuel Berger on Wednesday urged the incoming Bush administration to maintain robust engagement in the world, saying that it would be a "profound mistake" for the US to step back."It is tempting to step back from robust engagement, to simplify our presence in a complex world, to limit our definition of what is important to America or what seems most easily achievable," Berger said in a speech at a conference. "That would be a profound mistake. For the threats to America's interests only will grow more dangerous if neglected," he added. Berger, who leaves office on Saturday, urged the Bush administration to take specific steps to assure a continuity of US foreign policy in key areas. President-elect George W. Bush and his foreign policy advisers had maintained during the election campaign that the US should refrain from deploying troops overseas when US national interests are not involved. |
