UN Special Envoy Says Sanctions Taliban-targeted

The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General on Afghanistan Fransesc Vendrel has said the Security Council's proposed sanctions were against Taliban and not the Afghan people, according to a media report on Thursday.

The sanctions were targeted at Taliban and not the Afghan population although they might have some impacts on common men in Afghanistan, Vendrel said in an interview with local media.

He stressed that if the Taliban militia wants to reach a political agreement, the only way is through the UN as the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council reflected the views of member-countries.

He also said the UN was trying to help form a government in Afghanistan which is in line with the wishes of the Afghan people and enjoys the legitimacy of the neighboring countries.

The tough sanctions under a UN Security Council resolution announced at the end of last year will take effect on January 19 and last one year.
