Nepali Cabinet Reshuffled

Nepali King Birendra approved on Wednesday a reshuffle of the 37-member cabinet under Prime Minister Girija Koirala, appointing 12 new ministers, the official Radio Nepal said.

The reshuffle, under the recommendation of Koirala, includes appointment of Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat. Deputy prime minister, foreign minister, home minister and defense minister remain unchanged.

Among the 37 ministers, there are 18 ministers, 14 ministers of state and five assistant ministers, said the radio.

Details of the cabinet change will be released later.

This is the first major cabinet reshuffle made by Koirala since he took office in March 2000, aiming at improving his government's performance and mitigating the intra-party wrangling within his ruling Nepali Congress party.
