Death Toll in Indonesia's Landslide Reaches 122 : Report

The death toll in a series of landslides which struck Indonesia's Banten province last week has reached 122, a report reaching here said Monday.

The afternoon Suara Pembaruan daily wrote that Cipanas district, in Lebak regency, was the worst hit, where 106 people were killed in the disaster, while 11 bodies were found at Muncang district, and other bodies were found at Rangkasbitung, Banjarsari and Sajira districts.

Chief of Cipanas district Endang Darukudni was quoted as saying that those who were killed in Cipanas were gold miners.

He estimated that the death figure at the district might increase as there were 200 gold miners when the landslide occurred.

Observers blamed uncontrollable gold mining activities for the main cause of the disaster, particularly at Cipanas district.
