Hi-tech Exports in Shanghai on Rise

The high-technology industry in Shanghai reported a significant growth in exports last year with US$4.8 billion, up 45 percent over 1999.

Thus, the exports from the high-tech industry accounted for 18. 9 percent of the total exports in the city.

Foreign-funded enterprises are the main driving force behind the growth, contributing US$4.3 billion.

Of them, companies funded by industrial giants like Siemens and Lucent all reported export volume of over US$100 million.

Statistics show that the exports of computer and communications products reached US$2.2 billion, about 60 percent over that in 1999, while the exports of electronic technology products jumped some 40 percent.

The exports of high-technology products to the countries in Asia, North America and Europe last reached US$2.4, US$1.3 and about US$1 billion, rising over 40 percent respectively.
