Shandong Airlines Purchases Bombardier Business Jets

Shandong Airlines Rainbow Jet Co. signed a contract here Tuesday to purchase four Challenger 604 business jets from Canadian Bombardier Aerospace.

The jets cost US$100 million and will be used for Shandong Airline's charter business operations. The first jet is to be delivered in March 2002.

Robert E. Brown, president and chief executive officer of Bombardier Inc., expressed great enthusiasm towards the Chinese market at today's press conference.

He said, "I have always been encouraged by what I have seen in China. It has changed so quickly. We are positive about the Chinese market, and we would like to cooperate with China in other industrial sections besides providing products."

When asked about the market in West China, Brown said," I think our jets with either 50 seats, 70 seats or 90 seats will have great market potential in the area when considering its comparatively limited number of passengers."

Brown is one of the over 600 members of the delegation led by the Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien for a 9-day official visit to China which began on February 10. The delegation is the largest group to visit a foreign country in Canada's diplomatic history.

Most members of the delegation are businesspeople in the fields of agriculture, education, energy, environment technology, financial services, mining and minerals, and information and communications technology.

Bombardier Aerospace, the world's third largest regional aircraft producer, is one component of the Bombardier Inc.. Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited the company during his official visit to Canada in May last year.
