Beijing Olympic Campaigners: Greening Liquid Does No Harm

The spray painting used to turn the brown grass into emerald green in some of the major streets in Beijing, which is being evaluated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors, is harmless to the environment and human body, Beijing's Olympic bidding officials declared Wednesday.

"The greening liquid we used to beautify the city were imported from the United States and have been given a green light by the U. S. Environment Protection Center," said Jiang Xiaoyu, vice- president of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bidding Committee ( BOBICO).

"It does no harm to the environment and human body," he said.

The employment of a green-increasing liquid to brighten up the city is not the creation or invention of Beijing, Jiang said. It has been widely used in many of the metropolis all over the world.

"We have been importing the 'Ever Green' brand greening liquid since 1998 from the United States," he said.

The painting used for the outside surface of some buildings here is also environment-friendly, Jiang said.

It was not the original ideal of Beijing or the first time the city made such changes on some of the beat-up buildings either.

Actually, in May 2000, the municipal government made a decree that efforts should be made in a regular time to clean-up or maintain the surface of the buildings, Jiang said.

The painting in use comply with the environmental protection regulations by the Beijing Gardening Administration and has obtained the International Standard Organization (ISO) certificate standard, he said.

Some foreign press reported that Beijing are covering up its shortcomings during the visit of the IOC evaluation commission, whose findings should play an important role in IOC's decision on July 13.

"We're not faking anything or pretending to be good," Jiang said. "We have made detailed and careful preparations for their inspection, but our intention is to present them a truthful and real Beijing."

"For those irresponsible coverage, I can only express my regret, " Jiang said.
