Guangxi Holds Conference on Women and Drugs

A conference on women and the social and health consequences of drugs opened in Nanning Thursday in this capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

People are paying more attention to drugs and the AIDS virus, which is often spread by drug addicts, and the social consequences of AIDS are often caused by female drug addicts.

United Nations Statistics show that about 15,000 people around the world are newly infected by the AIDS virus every day, over 95 percent of the HIV carriers are in developing countries, and 50 percent are women.

In the past few years, the number of Chinese drug addicts and HIV carriers has grown rapidly, and the number of Chinese registered female drug addicts has increased from 118,000 to 138,000 last year.

Eleven experts from the United Nations and their Chinese counterparts are attending the conference, which is being co- sponsored by the National Narcotics Control Commission, United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and United Nations Narcotics Control Program.
