Powell Meets the Newly Appointed Chinese Ambassador to the US

US Secretary of State Colin Powell met Yang Jiechi, the newly appointed Chinese ambassador to the United States Wednesday morning in the Department of State. Ambassador Yang presented the duplicate of the state credentials to Powell.

Powell welcomed Yang to take up the post of Chinese ambassador to the US. He said that the United States and the People's Republic of China are two big countries with extensive common interests. The United States wishes to strengthen the cooperation and dialogues with the P.R.C while handle properly the divergences.

Yang Jiechi said that the Chinese government pays much attention to the Sino-US relationship and is willing to make joint efforts with the US to further mutual understanding between the two countries, seek common grounds while keeping differences and expand cooperation on the basis of the principles clarified in the three joint communiques so as to promote a healthy and steady development of bilateral relationship in the new century.
