Beijing Mapped out Plan for Physical Culture Development

Beijing's sports development during the 10th Five-year Plan Period has been mapped out to match with the general goal of "building China's top physical culture in accordance with the capital's status and economic development".

Beijing has made great achievements in physical culture in 2000 with 182 new gyms to have received 14 million inhabitants for physical training and 1085 school sports ground basically opened to the public, said Sun Kanglin, director of Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau, at the Beijing of Sports Working Conference. In addition, large-scaled sports facilities exceeded that of 1998 and 1999 put together, with good records scored in the Olympics, and 489 million-yuan sports lottery collected and about RMB 147 million yuan raised for public welfare funds.

Listed as follows are Goals set forth in the sports plan of the 10th Five-year Plan Period:

��To enhance social sports consciousness by making over 60 percent of residents to participate in physical training, over 55 percent of adults to have good physique, and to greatly improve youngster's physique;

��To increase public areas for sports facilities from the current 0.9 square meter/person to one square meter/person;

��To make sports industry Beijing's new economic growth point;

��To have a regular physical checkup for the residents in Beijing;

��By 2005, Beijing should have 20,000 social sports coaches in urban and developed rural areas;

��By 2005, complete public sports facilities in 95 percent of communities.

In addition, the plan has also set forth the goals for the Olympics, Asian Sports Games, and National Games in the coming five years.

Liu Jingmin, Vice Mayor of Beijing, said that this is an important year for Beijing as it has taken up heavy responsibilities of many sports activities, such as bidding for the 2008 Olympics, hosting the World Universiade, participating in the National Games and holding China International Sports Exposition. Beijing's 2008 Olympic bidding has received strong supports from all residents in Beijing. So we should, seizing the chance and enhancing our spirits, make the sports culture in Beijing to go at a full speed ahead.
