Most Swedes Against Joining NATO

Most Swedish voters oppose NATO membership, Sweden's largest daily Dagens Nyheter reported Thursday.

In a survey conducted by Stockholm University, 45 percent of the 3000 people polled said they were against the country's entry into NATO while only 24 percent expressed their support.

Apart from the Moderate Coalition Party, the other six political parties in the parliament, including the ruling Social Democratic Party, hold the similar position against NATO membership.

Sweden stood non-aligned and neutral during World War II and the Cold War period, but established "partnership for peace" with NATO after the Cold War and increased military cooperation with the alliance.
