Construction of Power Expansion Project Begins

Work on the expansion project of the Shizuishan Power Plant has started recently at Shizuishan, a major industrial base in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

This is the first key thermal power project approved by the central government in the new century.

Construction plans call for four 300,000-kw generating units to be installed, costing a total 4.5 billion yuan. It is the largest power project ever built in Ningxia.

The first generating unit is expected to become operational at the end of 2002. Two more units will be finished the following year the remaining two are to be completed in 2004.

Full operation of the project will alleviate power shortage in Ningxia and boost development of building materials and coal industry in northwest China, said a local official.
