Serious Kidnap Case Solved in Macao

Macao police have rescued a well-known Portuguese lawyer who was kidnapped last Wednesday night.

Joaquim Valente, the 56-year-old lawyer, was kidnapped on his way back home, and then reportedly missing for several days. It is regarded as the most serious kidnap case since Macao returned to the motherland at the end of 1999, as the lawyer has lived in Macao for more than 30 years and has certain social influence.

A special police group learned definite clues about the case early this morning and successfully rescued the lawyer at about 6 a.m. Further investigation of the case is under way.

"This shows that Macao's public security department has complete ability and determination to maintain good public order," said Cheong Kuoc Va, secretary for security of Macao Special

Administrative Regional government at a press conference on March 5. Macao is a society under the rule of law and permits no behavior destroying social stability, he noted.
