Early Reunification of China Common Aspiration of Chinese People: NPC Deputies, CPPCC Members

Deputies to China's top legislature and members of the country's most influential advisory body said Monday that resolving the issue of Taiwan at an early date for the country's complete reunification remains the common aspiration of all the Chinese people and an important task facing China in the new century.

People in China will remove all obstacles and smash all attempts to split the motherland for eventual reunification, according to deputies and members attending the annual sessions of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) and the Ninth Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee respectively.

They made the remarks in response to Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's speech on reunification of the motherland in his address at the NPC session Monday.

Deng Jian, an NPC deputy and mayor of Guang'an city in southwest China's Sichuan province, said the speech expressed the will of the Chinese People, adding the premier "has spoken our minds".

Taiwan has been an inseparable part of China since ancient times, he said.

Peng Qingyuan, a member of the CPPCC National Committee Standing Committee, said reunification of the motherland has great bearing on the reinvigoration of the Chinese nation and also the best choice for Taiwan.

Cai Zimin, honorary chairman of 6th Central Committee of Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, accused the new leader of Taiwan authorities of refusing to recognize the "One China" principle and himself as a Chinese after he came to power.

"We should remain high on alert against independence attempts by the Taiwan leader and resolutely stop any attempts to split" the motherland, said Cai, a native of Zhanghua County of Taiwan and a member of CPPCC National Committee Standing Committee.
