Beijing to Hold 3rd Physical Culture Festival

Beijing is going to hold the third Municipal Physical Culture Festival this May in support of Beijing's bid for hosting 2008 Olympics and in preparation for the 2nd National Sports Meet in 2002.

The biennial Beijing Physical Culture Festival was initiated in 1997. This year's Festival, co-sponsored by seven organizations cum Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau, will feature some simple and minor events, including mountain climbing, bicycle riding, setting-up exercises, and cliff climbing as well as billiards, bowling, bridge and sporty-dances and motorcycle barrier race and what not. The opening ceremony of the one-month festival will be held on the track and field ground in Fangzhuang Residential Community, Beijing on May 1.

According to Sun Kanglin, director of Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau, this festival will be a colorful and varied one, fresh in form and fashionable in style. Part of the public welfare funds from sports lottery will probably be used to meet the needs of residents for improving their health.
