Repair of US-China Cable Begins

The repair of the US-China undersea fiber optic cable, damaged Friday night for the second time in a month, was initiated Monday.

The Shanghai Telecom Co. said that CS. Segero, a repair ship from the Republic of Korea (ROK), set sail Monday and will arrive at the accident point on March 14.

The repair period will last for two weeks and cost a total of six million yuan.

China Telecom used satellites and other channels for information traffic and partial telecom routes have been restored after the accident occurred at 20:10 pm on March 9 at the point 32 m deep and 133 km north of the Shanghai-Chongming undersea cable station.

Investigation results show that the accident was caused by a casting fishing net.
