Hong Kong to Conduct 2001 Population Census

The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) will conduct the 2001 Population Census from March 15 to March 27, according to the Census and Statistics Department Wednesday.

Some 22,000 census officers will be deployed to visit all households in the Hong Kong SAR during the 13-day period.

"Individual letters have already been sent out to about 2,200, 000 households informing them of the 2001 Population Census and the name of the visiting census officer," said a spokesman for Census and Statistics Department Wednesday.

Noting that some 320,000 households have been selected for detailed inquiry through a scientific sampling procedure, the spokesman said individual members in these households would be required to answer questions on the questionnaire during home visit.

The other households have received a short form along with the householder letter, which should be completed by the households for collection by the census officers.

The spokesman called for public cooperation and support of the population census. "The information collected in a population census is vital to government planning and policy formulation, particularly in such fields as education, housing, transport, medical and social services. The data are also important to the private sector in formulating business strategies and to researchers in conducting social and economic studies," he explained.
