Sri Lankan Government MP's Security Officer Held for Bank Robbery

The security officer of a Sri Lankan member of parliament of ruling People's Alliance party for the Gampaha District has been arrested by the police in connection with the robbery of 2 million rupees (around 23,520 US dollars) from the Commercial Bank at Kadawata, suburb of the capital Colombo.

According to the police on Saturday two others out of a total gang of six were also involved in the robbery. Another security officer of the same MP and an army deserter are reported to be absconding while the others have been taken into custody.

The arrested security officer of the MP is a reserve police constable whose T 56 rifle had been used in the robbery, they said.

A sum of 125,000 rupees (around 1,470 US dollars) has been recovered from the loot so far.
