China Launches Campaign to Restore Economic Order
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Wednesday called for the greatest efforts to maintain the market economic order and to create a sound environment for the country's modernization drive.

Zhu told a national conference that a campaign should be promptly launched throughout the country to rectify and regulate the economic order.

He said that the nation is determined to fundamentally eliminate the chaos in the market economy and open a new chapter for the reform and opening up.

According to sources at the meeting, the move will be conductive to social security and the consolidation of the national economy, as well as the improvement of national competitiveness.

Therefore, it is also of great political significance, the meeting's document said.

Economic disorders include fake commodities, tax evasion, smuggling, cheating in foreign trade and foreign currency, lack of credit and failing to live up to contracts, the sources revealed.

In addition, there has been an increase in crimes in the economic sector, and accidents in production and construction.

Zhu pointed out that the rectification will be a major task for the coming five years, and the focus will be on eight aspects, including combating economic crimes, improving the construction market, restoring financial order, strengthening discipline in the financial sector and breaking up monopolies.

The meeting called for a crackdown on illegal activities that are harmful to ordinary people, including the production and sale of fake foodstuffs, medicines, cotton and vehicles.

It also revealed that there will be punishments for illegal operators of Internet bars and electronic games saloons.

Another focus of the drive will be the cultural market, according to the sources.
