US Closes Embassies in Ecuador, Uruguay and Paraguay

The United States embassy in the capitals of Ecuador, Uruguay and Paraguay as a precaution against violence, the local press in Quito reported Friday.

The US consulate in Ecuador's Guayaquil city was also closed Friday.

In a statement, the US embassy in Quito said it regretted any inconvenience caused as a result of the closure.

The embassies and consulates in the three countries closed following an order issued by a high-ranking official from the US State Department, because "threats have been received against their security in these countries and we're just being careful," the official said, quoted by the reports.

According to local reports, the official didn't mention from where the threats were coming from.
