China's Largest Shipbuilding Industry Based in Shanghai

Following Jiangnan and Qiuxin Shipyards regrouped into a new Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd., April 8 saw Hudong and Zhonghua Shipyards sign an agreement for jointly setting up the China's largest shipbuilding base -- Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd.

By adhering to the principle of introducing from abroad and self-innovation, China has opened up a road for national rejuvenation in its shipbuilding industry since 1990s. Now, the total volume of shipbuilding in China ranks the third in the world. On entering the new century, it is necessary to adjust the structure and train some key shipbuilding enterprises, to make China a great power in shipbuilding. In view of this, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) has, since last year, made great efforts in the re-structuring and regrouping of the industry.

The newly-established Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd. has scored all round achievements in technical renovation, planning and financial management, personnel arrangement, material purchase, foreign-oriented investment and corporate culture. Last year saw the shipbuilding volume of the two shipyards come to 740,000dwt, accounting for 21percent of the country' total with 600,000 horsepower of marine diesel engines manufactured, accounting for over 60 percent in domestic market. It has thus achieved a sales value of RMB 4billion yuan, coming out on top of the CSSC's group members. With an assets of RMB 7 billion yuan, the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd. owns the order forms of 33 ships of 1,410,000dwt and 77 marine diesel engines of 970,000 horsepower.

During the Tenth Five-year Plan period, the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd. will launch a technical innovation on a possible large scale. It will develop the large containerships, LNG carriers and supertankers, striving for reaching the shipbuilding capacity of 1,200,000dwt and engine-building capacity of 1,000,000 horsepower and doubling the original sales volume by 2005, thereby developing it into a first-rate shipbuilding base in the world.
