Ethiopian PM Says Rift in Ethiopian Ruling Party Solved

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zanawi has said that the rift within the ruling Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has been solved and the country is in full swing to build up democratic order, the Ethiopian News Agency reported Tuesday.

Meles, who was on a visit to Saudi Arabia, said Monday that the EPRDF has set out to rectify its mistakes and speed up the economic development in the country.

The Tigary People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is a dominant organization within the EPRDF, an alliance which also comprises Amhara National Democratic Movement and Oroma People's Democratic Organization.

He also said that a full consensus has been reached on 10 of the 11 demands raised by the Addis Ababa University students so as to end the riot that took place in Addis Ababa last week,

The Ethiopian government has agreed to withdraw the police from the university campus after the recruitment and establishment of a civilian force, added Meles.

This is the first remark by Meles on the 10-day student demonstrations which had caused riot in the capital.

He also accused some political organizations of miscalculating with the wrong assumption that the EPRDF was weakened and attempting to exploit the situation for their sinister purposes.

Meles, who left Monday here for a three-day visit to Saudi Arabia, is reportedly seeking fund support from Saudi Arabia on the Ethiopian economic development.
