Association Established to Combat Battery Pollution

East China's Shandong Province has recently established the country's first association for the control of battery pollution, a rising threat to the environment in China.

Officials from the Shandong Association of Battery Pollution Prevention and Treatment said they will set up a network for the collection and maintenance of waste batteries for recycling purposes.

The association will also sponsor research and application of technologies and materials for the production of environment-friendly batteries.

Battery pollution has become a rising problem in China in recent years. Experts said heavy metals and poisonous materials discharged from waste batteries could enter waters and soil, posing serious threat to the environment and the health of human beings.
