Swimming Contests across Qiongzhou Strait Surge High in China

With 13-year-old Li Lida's second challenge to swim across the Qiongzhou Strait this 17th, more and more Chinese are getting involved in the event. As reported, some three suchlike events are to be staged during May 17 to June 16.

Approximately 25 to 32 km in width, the Strait is blessed with mild water temperature, good seawater quality and other appropriate conditions. However, eight to ten hours' marathon swimming remains a challenge to the physical strength, endurance and courage.

Last year, Hainan Redao Sports Development Company, taking an initiative, succeeded in staging the Grand Prix of this game in Hainan Province and now it is going to be a national marathon swimming competition from this June. Moreover, the number of swimmers will be increased from 30 to 60, of which, 10 players will come as invited from the two SARs and Taiwan Province.

Li Lida, who was too young to participate last year, failed in the later attempt to achieve his goal on account of the bad weather conditions and other reasons. However, his ardent love for swimming and willingness to fight for the glory of the Chinese children will encourage him to have another challenge on his 13th birthday.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Chinese police, May 19 will see a group of over 20, picked out among the public security and armed policemen from all over the country swim across the Qiongzhou Straits in order to show their support to Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, thereby setting a new Guinness World Record.
