DPRK Hit by Severe Drought

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is experiencing a severe drought due to insufficient rainfall this spring, the Korean Central News Agency reported Wednesday.

The report said the country's agriculture is facing great difficulties caused by the severe drought since the beginning of the year. In the west coastal areas south to Mundok County of South Pyongan Province, the average rainfall has fallen 11 percent since February, compared with the same period of last year, to reach just 14 millimeters.

North Pyongan Province, Kaesong, Nampo and other areas have also been affected by the severe drought.

Measures are being taken in the drought-hit areas to enlarge the irrigated field, including water diverting works and the use of ground water.
