NATO Foreign Ministers to Discuss Balkans, NMD

NATO foreign ministers scheduled to meet on May 29-30 will discuss the situation in the Balkans, the Euro-Atlantic security issue and proposed US missile defense system, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Top on the agenda are the tensions in the Balkan region, especially the situation in border areas between Macedonia and southern Serbia, Yugoslavia, NATO spokesman Yves Brodeur told reporters.

The foreign ministers are expected to voice their support for Macedonia in its fight against "terrorist activities" conducted by ethnic Albanian rebels in the area, Brodeur said.

The meeting will also discuss the Europe-Atlantic security issue and new challenges faced by the alliance. The discussion will involve the U.S. national missile defense (NMD) scheme, the spokesman said.

The Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council as well as the standing committee between Russia and NATO will also meet on the sidelines of the NATO meeting, Brodeur said.
