Children's Future Highlighted

With the coming of International Children's Day on June 1, the whole of society is once again looking to act on its concern for the safe and healthy growth of children and teenagers, according to China Daily.

Cheng Shuqin, secretary-general of the China Children's and Teenagers' Fund , announced yesterday in Beijing that the fund will launch a program called "Safe and Healthy Growth Week" to allow more people to become involved in the project and to draw the public's attention to children's health and well-being.

Between May 22 and June 3, Beijing will hold a variety of activities for children. These will include getting 10, 000 signatures on a document outlining aims for the safe and healthy growth of Chinese children and teenagers in the new century , a general knowledge competition and a physical training exercise, according to Cheng.

Organized by the fund and the Safe Production Bureau under the State Economic and Trade Commission , the Safe and Healthy Growth Project is striving to create a sound environment for the growth of children and teenagers, said Gu Xiulian, vice-president of the fund.

"It also hopes to help stop children and teenagers from dropping out of school and keep them away from harm and crime, " Gu said at the project's launch.

She pointed out that with economic development, today's children face many new potential risks.

Gu called on more people, especially students from primary and middle schools and universities , to get involved in the project as volunteers.
