Liaison Group to Promote Cooperation Between Macao, Guangdong

China's central government has approved the establishment of a special liaison group to advance the cooperation between the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the neighboring Guangdong Province in south China in an all-round manner.

As a result, Macao and Guangdong are expected to conduct much closer cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, construction of basic facilities, environmental protection, education, culture, and science and technology, according to sources from the Information Bureau of the SAR government.

The group, consisting dozens of government officials, will be a standing body to make research into and coordinate the cooperation between the two places and make preparations for high-level meetings. It will hold at least one meeting annually in Guangdong or Macao on a rotating basis.

Guangdong and Macao have decided to jointly develop the Hengqin Island into a tourist attraction, expand the processing trade and enhance the customs cooperation.

A total of 54 travel agencies in Macao have been entitled by the China National Tourism Administration to apply for the tourist visas for the foreign visitors who want to extend their trips to ten cities in Guangdong from Macao, which is expected to give an impetus to the tourism business of the two places.
