Ethiopian Court Suspends Justice Minister's SentenceAn Ethiopian court has suspended the ruling it made earlier on Justice Minister AtoWorede Wolde Welde, the local media reported Friday.After the ruling was made, however, the court reversed the sentence due to further considerations it had made, and the minister had told the court that it failed to respond to the summons because he had a parliamentary hearing. The minister, according to the decision rendered by the court, failed to appear without lawful excuse having lawfully summoned to appear in the judicial proceedings to explain a case. According to the court, he was summoned to appear before the bench on May 25 and produce the detainee, Ato Tamerat Tarekegn who was the polite-bureau member of the Ethiopian Democratic Party and arrested by police in the wake of the April riot in the capital. But the minister failed to appear on May 25 and the court ordered police to arrest him on Tuesday and sentenced him to one month imprisonment for refusal to aid justice. |
