Sudanese Govt. Halts Aerial Bombing Against Rebels
The Sudanese government has declared to end aerial bombardment on the rebel-dominated areas of southern Sudan, the Kenya Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The announcement was made by Sudanese Minister of State in charge of Foreign Affairs Chol Deng Alak here on Tuesday.
Alak told a press conference that as a way towards peaceful solution to the war-ravaged country, his government has decided to end aerial bombardment of southern Sudan.
The minister said that his government is ready for a comprehensive ceasefire and is challenging the rebels to show same commitment to peace.
Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir is ready to discuss and reach consensus with the rebels leader John Garang for the benefit of the suffering southern Sudanese people, Alak added.
However, the rebel Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army led by Garang vowed to "continue fighting until the Khartoum government becomes sincere and shows true commitment to peace in the Sudan".
At the one-day Inter-governmental Authority for Development summit on the Sudan peace held in Nairobi last Saturday, no agreement on ceasefire in the Sudan was reached among the involved parties.
The meeting was initiated by Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi and attended by the heads of state from Uganda, Djibouti and Ethiopia. Sudanese President El-Bashir and Garang were also present.
