Government Tanks Fire on Rebel Positions in Macedonia

Macedonian government tanks opened fire on positions of the rebel ethnic-Albanian National Liberation Army in the country's north.

The attacks began at 5:00 am (03:00 GMT) June 8.

The tanks were heard firing more than 60 shells at rebel positions around the towns of Slupcane, Otlja and Orizare.

A dozen particularly powerful blasts were heard near the rebel-held Orthodox Matejce monastery.

Each missile shook the windows of the monastery inhabited by Orthodox monks.

The guerrilla fighters responded to the attacks but with much lighter arms.

It was difficult to estimate damage caused by the Macedonian forces.

Thousands of ethnic Albanian civilians have been trapped for a month in the combat zone.
