Internet "ID Card" Put into Use in North China City

The northern port city of Tianjin took the initiative in China to put into use a kind of identification card on the Internet Friday, in a bid to push forward network technology development.

The "ID card," jointly developed by the Tianjin Telecom and the city's quality and technical supervision administration, can be used for on-line tax paying and purchase and safe e-mail exchange.

The "ID card" is based on the identification code for Chinese organizations, institutions and enterprises set by the national quality and technical supervision department, and on the digital certificate issued by China Telecom.

Experts say to ensure the safety of electronic transaction is the key to e-commerce. According to international practice, identification code for organizations is the base for Internet registration, search and data transmission, while the digital certificate may protect the secrecy of Internet information transmission and prevent denial of Internet activities.
