China's Legislature to Examine 8 Draft Laws

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) will kick off a five-day legislative session on June 26, examining eight draft laws.

According to a meeting held Monday by the chairman and vice- chairmen of the NPC Standing Committee, lawmakers in the upcoming bi-monthly session will have their first hearing of the draft law on rural land contract, draft amendments to the criminal code, the draft law on prevention and treatment of occupational diseases and the draft law on management of maritime space utilization.

Draft laws previously reviewed, which are on judges, prosecutors, prevention and control of desertification, and one on population and family planning, will also be tabled with lawmakers for further examination Tuesday next week.

The State Council will deliver reports to lawmakers at the meeting on the 2000 central final account, government audit report on the execution of the budget for the year 2000 and other financial expenditure and income.

A law-enforcement inspection team of the NPC Standing Committee will report to the full meeting of the Committee on how the nation 's Security Law has been implemented, according to a decision at Monday's meeting, presided over by Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.
