Cambodia Considers Construction of Road as Strategic Priority: Hun Sen

The Royal government has considered construction of physical infrastructure, especially road and bridge, as the strategic priority in generating economic growth and alleviating poverty of the people in Cambodia, Prime Minister Hun Sen said Tuesday in Kampong Cham.

Hun Sen made the remark at the ground-breaking ceremony of the construction of Bridge No. 26 on National Route 6A under Japanese Government' s grant program at Batheay district, Kampong Cham province, 45 kilometers northwest of Phnom Penh.

Over the last few decades, Cambodia's road and bridge infrastructure were seriously damaged and destroyed by the protracted war and internal conflicts, Hun Sen said. More horribly, the severe floods disasters last year played havoc with the physical infrastructure systems, he added.

He pointed out that this road and bridge network will links all provinces within the country, so it will facilitate the flow of goods and transportation of agricultural and industrial products to the markets in exchange for profit, thus fostering economic growth and poverty alleviation in the country.

The construction of Bridge No. 26 with the length of 100 meters will be completely finished for official use in March, 2002, with the total funds of 4.2 million U. S. dollars provided by the Japanese government.
