Cambodia, Thailand Sign Joint Communique on Friendly Cooperation

Visiting Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen Monday evening signed a Joint Communique on Friendly Cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia.

Te Nontara, Cambodian delegation spokesman told reporters shortly after the two premiers signed the communique at the Council of Ministers.

Cambodia and Thailand will continue to maintain friendly cooperation relationship between the two countries in accordance with U.N. principles and standards of international laws, the communique said.

The two countries have agreed to establish regular contacts between high-level officials in the civil, military and police areas, in addition to regular exchanges of ideas between the two foreign ministries.

They have also agreed to jointly combat illegal cross-border activities, such as drug trafficking and smuggling of weapons.

Cambodia and Thailand have reaffirmed the common targets on trade and investment agreed on by the two countries, such as opening checkpoints in the border areas, jointly developing tourism, cooperating in the areas of agriculture and fishery.

The two countries also have signed other three agreements, including agreement on economic and trade cooperation, jointly develop petroleum in the area of their overlapping maritime claims to the continental shelf.

Thaksin and his Thai delegation arrived here Monday afternoon for a 2-day official visit to Cambodia at the invitation of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

He and Hun Sen held official talks before signing the joint communique.

During the visit, he will meet with King Norodom Sihanouk and make courtesy calls on Samdech Chea Sim, president of Senate and Prince Norodom Ranariddh, president of the National Assembly.
