Yugoslav President in Hungary for Closer Cooperation
Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica wound up his first official visit to Hungary Wednesday after leaders of the two countries discussed bilateral and regional issues and signed a string of pacts on economic cooperation.
At their talks Hungarian President Ferenc Madl and his Yugoslav counterpart discussed the possibility of strengthening cooperation in large-scale projects, highway and railroad transportation, the establishment of new border checkpoints and restoration of bridges and navigation on the Danube River.
At a joint press conference, the two leaders expressed the wish that the two neighboring countries would strengthen future bilateral ties and cooperation in all fields.
On the situation in Kosovo and Macedonia, Kostunica stressed that both ethnic Serbs and Albanians should be protected, but the solutions proposed by some international bodies cannot achieve this goal.
Madl said it is vitally important to maintain Yugoslavia's territorial integrity and he pledged Hungary's support for Belgrade's efforts to ease tensions in the region through political dialogue and other peaceful means.
The finance ministers of the two countries Wednesday signed agreements on the reciprocal protection of investment and avoidance of double taxation.
