New Law to Control Serious Occupational Diseases

Priority for occupational disease control should be given to a couple of most harmful types, said Yin Dakui, Vice Minister of Health, when briefing the draft law of occupational disease prevention to China's lawmakers Tuesday.

At the on-going 22nd session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the vice minister cited sources with his ministry that more Chinese are dying from diseases related to their occupations, with an accumulated death toll of 133,226 pneumoconiosis victims.

Pundits here say that the number will see a still increase in the next decade if no immediate actions are taken. Illness caused by dust, radioactivity pollution and poisonous processing will put more people on the risk of dying, handicapping or losing work ability.

Therefore, the draft law, first of its kind in China, mainly focuses on prevention of the above killing diseases. Measures will be taken from the cause of those diseases and supervision is thorough through the precautions, protection on the working spot, and cure and security after any disease occurs.

Healthy working environment and social security are asked in the draft law to be ensured by employers.
