Migrant Laborers from Sichuan Earn 100 Billion Yuan in Five Years

Development of labor services has become a good way of raising income of the people living in economically underdeveloped areas and promoting rural economic growth.

This is highlighted by the situation in Sichuan Province, southwest China.

More than 50 million migrant workers from the province had sent home more than 100 billion yuan (12.04 billion US dollars) from various parts of the country in the 1996-2000 period, local sources said.

Last year, 12 million migrant laborers from the province remitted 21 billion yuan (2.53 billion US dollars), equal to the annual revenue of the province.

Revenue from labor services contributed 21.2 percent of the total rural economic growth of the province last year, according to a sample survey.

Another survey carried out in Luxian County shows that last year, the county's revenue from labor services totaled 1.1 billion yuan, accounting for 20 percent of the county's gross domestic product for the same year.

Experts suggested that more efforts should be made to enhance the development of labor services and make it a major way to increase farmers' incomes under the new conditions.
