Sino-ROK Fishing Agreement to Take Effect
A fishery agreement between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) will take effect tomorrow, the Ministry of Agriculture said Friday.
Chinese Deputy Minister of Agriculture Qi Jingfa said the agreement, which the two countries reached last August, will benefit the long-term protection and utilization of oceanic resources and promote sustained development of the fishery industry.
The two sides reached agreement on issues regarding sea areas for fishing, the scale of fishing and related fishing conditions, Qi said.
According to the agreement, 2,796 Chinese fishing boats will be allowed to fish in the sea area under the ROK's control for the first year after the agreement takes effect, while 1,402 ROK fishing vessels will be permitted to enter the sea area under China's control.
A number of Chinese fishing vessels have to retreat from the fishing area near the ROK coast, where the fishing output is to be reduced, Qi noted.
The fishing agreement between China and the ROK is China's second bilateral fishing agreement, following one signed with Japan.
