Hydropower Plant Operational in East China
The first set of generators at the Gangkouwan Reservoir of Anhui Province in east China went into formal operation Saturday, one year ahead of schedule.
The reservoir is located on the Shuiyangjiang, a tributary of the Yangtze River. It has a capacity of 940 million cubic meters and is able to generate 113 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year.
Its operation will greatly increase the flood control capacity of Anhui and Jiangsu provinces and improve the power supply to the nearby city of Xuancheng, said official sources.
The construction of the reservoir was started in October 1998 and cost 1.1 billion yuan.
