Typhoon Death Toll Rises to 121 in Philippines

The death toll of typhoon "Utor" climbed to 121 as search continued for 44 others reported missing, the Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Council said Sunday.

A total of 130 persons were injured and some 600,000 people were affected by the typhoon, which swept across the northern Philippines last week and left the country on Thursday, the council said.

The casualties came mostly from the northern mountain city of Baguio and nearby provinces because of the landslides that took place amid Utor's wrath.

The Office of Civil Defense put the total damage to agriculture and property at 1.08 billion pesos (about 20.5 million U.S. dollars).

Relief operations are ongoing in the affected areas, and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has called military engineers to help repair the damage caused by the typhoon, the strongest to hit the country so far this year.
