Beijing Party Chief Meets Vietnamese Visitor

Jia Qinglin, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met here Monday with Nguyen Phu Trong, secretary of the Hanoi City Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).

Jia, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, briefed Nguyen, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPV Central Committee, on the spirit of a speech by General Secretary Jiang Zemin of the CPC Central Committee at a gathering marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and the development of Beijing over the past 20 years.

Over the past decade relations between the two parties and countries have kept developing, Jia said. He expressed belief that the relations between the two capital cities will also continue to develop.

Jia said the two cities should learn from each other and increase exchange to promote common development.

Nguyen said the great changes in Beijing and China as well are closely associated with the correct leadership of the CPC. He said Hanoi wants to learn from Beijing's experiences in reforms and opening to the outside world.

Officials of the two cities signed a memorandum of understanding on strengthening cooperation between the two cities Monday.

Beijing and Hanoi became sister cities in 1994.
