Sri Lankan Military Denies Rape Charges
Sri Lankan military denied on Monday that government soldiers were involved in the rape of a 42- year-old Tamil woman in Meesalai area in northern Jaffna peninsula on Saturday.
Military spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said that the army had nothing to do with the alleged rape. The Tiger rebel infiltrators in the area were responsible, he added.
He said that the assailants were reported to have spoken in Tamil, the language government soldiers not commonly speak.
He said the rape may have been carried out to discredit government forces.
On June 25 another Tamil woman has been reportedly raped by three policemen at a check point in capital Colombo, which has sparked protests of minority Tamils in the Tamil dominated areas in the war-torn country.
