Retired Atom Bomb Base to Become Tourist Destination

Xihai Town, capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Haibei in Qinghai Province, northwest China, and the birthplace of China's first atom bomb and first hydrogen bomb, now aims to turn itself into a tourism attraction.

An official with the prefectural tourism administration said that Xihai will develop tourism based on the sites where China's first A-bomb and H-bomb were developed.

Xihai was retired as an atom bomb base in 1995, according to a decision of the central government of China.

A group of exhibition centers displaying the birth and growth of China's first atom bomb and H-bomb will be built, and the workplaces and residences of Chinese scientists involved in the work will be restored, according to the official.

Statistics show that more than 200,000 domestic and overseas travelers visited the township last year.
