Beijing Sets Sports Complexes for 2008 Games

Beijing has got decided its plans of sports complexes for the 2008 Olympic Games after it won the bid at 112th plenary session of IOC July 13 in Moscow.

The altogether 37 stadiums will be built respectively in Beijing, Qingdao and Tianjin at a cost of US$1.6bn, with 32 of them to be located in Beijing.

Olympic stadiums in Beijing would be built in five areas centering round the Olympic Green which is located at the northern tip of the city's central axis and between the 4th and 5th ring roads. With the National Stadium having a capacity of 80,000 people in the heart of the Olympic Green it is surrounded by 14 stadiums for track and field, gymnastics, swimming and so on. The whole Olympic Green covers an area of 1,215 hectares with a total floor-space of 2m square meters.

Besides, five sports events include volleyball and weight lifting will be held in the "university complex" consisting of stadiums in a number of universities as Beijing University of Physical Education, Capital College of Physical Education and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics as well as the Capital Stadium. Located in Shijingshan district of the western region are the 8 stadiums as Wukesong Stadium, Beijing Shooting Range and Laoshan Cycling Field to host seven events as shooting and cycling. The Olympic water-park is to be built in Shunyi, and Beijing Xiangcun Racing Field to host three events as rowing, canoeing, and horsemanship.
