Int'l Conference on Chinese Philosophy Opens

The 12th International Conference on Chinese Philosophy started Saturday in Beijing.

The conference was sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' (CASS) graduate school, the International Society for Chinese Philosophy and the Society of Chinese Philosophy History.

In a congratulatory letter to the conference, Li Tieying, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said both the Chinese and Western civilization were important origins of human civilization, and could push forward the whole human society.

Differences between various civilizations might not necessarily result in contradictions or conflicts, said Li, who is also CASS president.

According to historical and modern evidence, any civilization should learn from others in order to reach its own development and prosperity, Li said.

Chinese culture and philosophy could make contribution to not only the nation, but also the world, he said.

More than 300 scholars and experts from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, as well as 13 foreign countries such as Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, Japan and the United States participated in the four-day conference, with the major theme of Chinese Philosophy and Trends of 21st Century Civilization.

Most of the participants said Chinese philosophy, Marxist philosophy and modern Western philosophy should learn from each other for their future development.

Many well-known philosophers, including Zhang Dainian, Ren Jiyu, Cheng Zhongying, Tang Yijie and Huang Xinchuan, also attended the conference.
